4 Tips to Help You Avoid Traffic Jams During Qingming Festival

1. Avoid the Kaifeng area and choose an alternative route

During the Qingming Festival, many major roads will be closed, and even those not visiting cemeteries may find themselves unable to travel to these areas due to traffic restrictions. If your destination is near a cemetery, it is recommended to plan alternative routes in advance, such as:

Chai Wan/Cape Collinson Road affected ➝ Avoid Chai Wan Road, alternatively viathe Eastern CorridororTaikoo area.
Diamond Hill/Tseung Kwan O road closure ➝ Usethe Kwun Tong BypassorCheung Lam Tunnelto avoid congestion.
Castle Peak/Wo Hop Shek Cemetery traffic control ➝ Usethe Tai Lam TunnelorFanling Highway.

If you need to travel to the affected areas, please checkGoogle Mapsorthe Transport Department's real-time traffic informationfor the latest traffic conditions.

2. Avoid peak tomb-sweeping times and travel during off-peak hours

The peak period for tomb sweeping during the Qingming Festival is mainly from10:00 AM to 2:00 PM, during which time the traffic around the cemetery will be particularly congested.

Avoid going out between 10:00 AM and 2:00 PM; instead, go out after 3:00 PM or before 7:00 AM.
If you need to take public transportation, choose off-peak hours to reduce waiting time.

3. Public transportation will be rerouted; alternative routes will be available

Many buses and minibuses will be rerouted due to road closures. If you usually use public transportation, remember to check the route changes in advance. For example:

  • Citybus route 388 and KMB route 14S will have additional shuttle services. Some routes may be rerouted due to road closures at cemeteries.

  • The areas around MTR stations will become even more crowded . It is advisable to avoid popular cemetery-sweeping spots such as Tiu Keng Ling Station, Diamond Hill Station, and Chai Wan Station.

Alternative options:
✔ Takethe MTR directly toyour destination to avoid transferring to buses or minibuses.
✔ Useshared bicycles or motorcyclesto flexibly avoid congested roads.

4. Choose shopping malls and tourist attractions with fewer crowds

Because many people will be visiting cemeteries during the Qingming Festival, some popular shopping malls and tourist attractions will be less crowded. If you want to avoid the crowds, you can choose to:

  • Hiking and long-distance travel: places like Sai Kung High Island Reservoir and Mui Wo Phoenix Trail are less affected by road closures.

  • Shopping malls: Areas less affected include K11 MUSEA in Tsim Sha Tsui, Langham Place in Mong Kok, and Pop Corn in Tseung Kwan O.

  • Island hopping: During the Qingming Festival, Lamma Island, Cheung Chau, and other places were not too crowded.

In addition, since many people go out to sweep tombs, restaurants and some entertainment venues are relatively less crowded, making them suitable for family gatherings or get-togethers with friends

Conclusion: Plan ahead for a smooth trip

Qingming Festival is an important traditional festival in Hong Kong. Whether you visit graves or not, you should check the road closure arrangements in advance and avoid congested areas to ensure a smooth journey
