Must-read before your trip during peak season: A complete guide to choosing single-trip vs. annual travel insurance

It's peak travel season again, and many people will take advantage of the Christmas and New Year holidays to travel with their families. Whether it's a long or short trip, travel insurance is a necessity. So what's the difference between purchasing single-trip or annual travel insurance?

Single-trip travel insurance and annual travel insurance offer largely the same coverage, with the main differences being the number of trips covered, the number of days per trip, and the cost

Main differences at a glance

Single-trip insurance: Advantages and suitable situations

Single-trip travel insurance allows for precise selection based on the actual number of days and destination of the trip, making it more cost-effective for those who only travel once or twice a year. The maximum coverage period for this type of policy is generally longer than that of an annual plan, making it suitable for those traveling for more than 90 days at a time. Furthermore, most single-trip travel insurance policies on the market do not have age restrictions, making them more suitable for older individuals

The downside is that you have to renew your insurance policy before each trip, and if your trip is rescheduled or extended, you need to notify the insurance company to make changes. Also, many products cannot be flexibly changed, which complicates what should be a simple insurance policy. Furthermore, if you travel abroad multiple times within a year, the accumulated premiums may be higher than the annual premiums

Annual travel insurance: Advantages and suitable situations

Annual travel insurance only needs to be purchased once a year, and unlimited travel throughout the year is covered. It is especially convenient for people who fly frequently, are on business trips, or often travel short-term (especially for a quick trip within a day or two). When the number of trips reaches a certain level, the total cost of a full-year policy is more economical than purchasing single insurance repeatedly

It should be noted that most annual plans only cover approximately 90–100 days per trip, and days exceeding this limit are not covered, making them unsuitable for trips involving long stays

Pick:

Approximate number of times (for reference)

  • If you travel 3-5 times or more a year, you can assess whether annual travel insurance is more cost-effective than buying individual travel policies, especially for those who travel spontaneously. For example, considering a 7-day short trip to Asia, or about 7 trips to Asia a year, or about 4-5 longer global trips, annual insurance will start to be more economical than multiple individual travel policies

Besides the number of times, what else should I watch?

  • Do you often make quick, impromptu trips to Shenzhen, Macau, or nearby areas? If so, annual travel insurance can save you the hassle of buying individual policies each time, and you won't have to worry about forgetting to enroll

  • Annual travel insurance typically only covers about 90 days per trip. If you're staying for more than 3 months at a time, you may need to switch to single-trip long-term travel insurance

In summary, if you travel abroad at least 3-5 times a year, you can start considering whether year-round travel insurance is more cost-effective and convenient. However, the actual "number of trips per trip" will vary depending on the destination (Asia or globally), the length of each trip, and the insurance company you choose

Regardless of which option you choose, you should compare the details of different companies' terms and conditions, such as medical coverage, trip cancellation, baggage and mobile phone compensation, self-driving tours and high-risk activities, and then make a final decision based on your actual travel patterns
