Your pet is protected and safe! Hong Kong people must read the complete guide to pet insurance
A 2023 survey by the Hong Kong Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) showed that there are approximately 1.6 million pets in Hong Kong, including about 850,000 dogs, 700,000 cats, and about 50,000 other small animals (such as rabbits, hamsters, and fish). With changes in population structure and the trend of declining birth rates, many families regard their pets as "emotional companions," and the number of pets is increasing year by year
Currently, many Hong Kong residents cherish their pets dearly. Market data from the 2026 Pet Festival shows that sales exceeded HK$100 million, a 10% year-on-year increase. The majority of purchases were for pet health products, treats, and so on, demonstrating the generous spending of pet owners. However, have these owners purchased pet insurance for their beloved pets?
Why buy insurance for your pet?
1. Veterinary costs are high
The cost of a general medical consultation in Hong Kong ranges from HK$500 to HK$1,200, while a single surgery or treatment for a chronic disease (such as cancer or heart disease) can easily cost tens of thousands to hundreds of thousands of dollars
With the widespread availability of advanced diagnostic technologies such as MRI, CT, and chemotherapy, the costs involved are higher, and without insurance, it is easy to give up the best treatment plan due to financial issues
2. Accidents and illnesses are unpredictable
Pets can fall, ingest food accidentally, or develop acute illnesses at any time, especially when they are young or old. Insurance can help reduce medical expenses
3. Third-party liability protection
If a pet unfortunately bites or damages someone else's property, the insurance can provide hundreds of thousands to millions of Hong Kong dollars in third-party liability compensation, avoiding personal financial losses and ensuring the owner's peace of mind
You should read it carefully before purchasing insurance
Annual medical expenses:Depending on whether you expect to undergo major surgery, the general plan ranges from approximately HKD 30,000 to HKD 100,000 per year.
Compensation ratio and deductible:For example, 90% compensation but the premium will be more expensive, while 70-80% compensation is relatively more affordable; some policies allow you to set a deductible of HKD 0/500/1,500 per payment.
Insurance/renewal age:Generally, only those aged 13 weeks to 8-11 years are accepted for insurance. Some policies specify that the policy can be renewed for life, while others only guarantee renewal until age 13, after which the company needs to review and approve the policy again.
Microchip and sterilization:Some insurance policies require pets to have microchips implanted and to have been sterilized.
Excluded items:congenital diseases, existing diseases, lack of vaccination, breeding purposes, certain high-risk breeds, such as Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa Inu, Dogo Argentino, Fila Brasileiro, Tibetan Mastiff, and mixed breeds, are often not covered. Pay special attention to these.
Price vs. Coverage:When comparing, you should look at the annual premium, total medical coverage limit, per-insurance limit, third-party liability compensation, co-insurance ratio, etc., rather than just looking at the "cheapest".
What does pet insurance cover?
Medical expenses:including outpatient visits, hospitalization, surgery, etc., are subject to an annual total limit and a maximum reimbursement per visit/day.
Third-party liability:If your pet bites someone or damages someone else's property, most insurance policies will provide at least HK$1,000,000 in third-party liability coverage, but usually exclude certain breeds listed as "dangerous breeds".
Other additional coverage:Some plans include advertising costs for lost pet searches, funeral expenses, and re-adoption of pets, depending on the product design.
